Chronic diseases require comprehensive management for optimal health. Osteopathy offers a holistic approach to chronic disease management, addressing underlying causes, enhancing mobility, and promoting wellness. In Australia, Medicare provides support through Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plans.
Chronic Disease Management
Medicare offers support for individuals with chronic diseases through CDM plans, previously known as Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plans. These plans enable eligible patients to access Medicare rebates for specific allied health services, including osteopathy.
To be eligible for a CDM plan, patients must have a chronic medical condition that is likely to last for at least six months or is terminal. They must also require ongoing care from a multidisciplinary team. Examples of relevant medical conditions may include, arthritis, disc bulge or herniation, migraines or headaches, sciatica, frozen shoulder, autoimmune conditions and many more. The referral process involves consulting a GP, who assesses the patient's condition and determines their eligibility for a CDM plan.
Under a CDM plan, patients can receive up to five Medicare rebatable allied health visits per calendar year (First Nations People can access an additional five visits each year). This means that patients can access osteopathic treatment sessions with Medicare rebates, making them more affordable and accessible. Morning Osteopathy supports the use of CDM plans and patients will get a rebate of $56 per eligible visit.
Once a patient has a CDM plan in place, they can consult an osteopath as part of their multidisciplinary care team. Osteopaths work in collaboration with other healthcare professionals involved in the patient's care, ensuring integrated and coordinated management to best achieve the patient’s goals.
Osteopathy, combined with Medicare's CDM plans, emphasizes patient empowerment and self-management. Osteopaths provide education, guidance, and personalized strategies for patients to actively participate in their own care. By understanding their condition and adopting healthy lifestyle habits, patients can make informed decisions and take control of their well-being.
Osteopathy offers a holistic approach to managing chronic diseases, addressing underlying causes, improving mobility, and enhancing overall wellness. With the support of Medicare's Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plans, eligible patients can access osteopathic treatments with Medicare rebates. This collaboration between osteopathy and Medicare empowers individuals to manage their chronic conditions effectively, improve their quality of life, and promote overall well-being. If you have a chronic disease, consult your GP to determine if you are eligible for a CDM plan and explore the benefits of osteopathic treatment within this framework.
